Delhi 62, Sullivan West 6
Points galore.
After finding the endzone a
measly 19 times all season last year, the Bulldogs finally found it 8 times on
Saturday.
Brenton Hood and Nate
Rockefeller each scored 3 TD’s, and the defense provided a near bulletproof
effort, as Delhi rolled in the ’05 opener.
Delhi’s offensive line dominated Sullivan West throughout the game. Delhi never punted in the game, and was only held on downs once, on the first series. The ‘Dogs piled up 423 yards rushing, with 340 of that coming from the starting backfield of Hood and Rockefeller. With the line doing its part, these 2 boys certainly did their part, with some hardnosed open field running, tackle breaking, and acceleration and speed that looked far improved over the previous season. Delhi was so dominant that they even made every two point conversion until the last TD, when it was mostly the 2nd and 3rd offense on the field.
The
Bulldog defense was nearly as impressive, allowing 42 yards rushing on 28
carries. They did allow 122 yards passing, but much of that came in the
4th quarter when Delhi was heavy into its bench. The one exception
was at the end of the first half, when a 32 yard pass from QB Jim Maloney to WR
Donald Cooper set up Steve Daley’s 1 yard TD run.
Geoff Rosa intercepted a
4th quarter pass and returned it for a TD with some nifty
running.
