Consistent Offense Leads ‘Dogs to Opener Victory
Delhi opened the
2010 campaign in style, riding an efficient and consistent offensive effort to
a 42-7 victory over the Unatego Spartans.
Delhi quickly shot out
of the gates, as junior Colin Ellis stepped in front of a Unatego
pass on the Spartans’ first play from scrimmage and came down with the ball at
the Unatego 32. Delhi proceeded to move the ball
right down the field on the running of senior Jack Fletcher and junior Tom Telian, and Fletcher finished it off with a 2 yard run.
Senior Kevin O’Connell took a pitch and carried it in for the 2 point
conversion, and Delhi held an 8-0 lead less than 3 minutes into the game.
Unatego received the ensuing kick,
and Delhi’s defense showed off a good sharp series, holding Unatego
to -1 yard and a 3 and out. The ‘Dogs took over on Unatego’s
43, and some more good running by Telian and Fletcher
brought the pigskin right back down the field once again. This time Telian scored his first varsity TD on a tough 4 yard run.
The 2 point pass was no good, but Delhi held a commanding 14-0 lead midway into
the first quarter.
The Bulldogs would
strike once more in the first, as Fletcher recovered a Spartan fumble on the Spartan
25. Ellis entered the game to rest Telian, and showed
off his own significant ball carrying skills. Following a Delhi penalty, Delhi
faced a first and goal from the 20 yard line. Delhi continued to show its
rushing dominance, as Ellis ripped off 2 consecutive 10 yard runs to score his
own first varsity TD. The 2 point pass again fell incomplete, but Delhi was now
up 20-0 as the first quarter wound down.
Unatego then began to pull themselves together a bit more. After being held without a
first down in the first quarter, the Spartans began moving the ball a bit better,
mostly on the running of QB Tyler Butler and RB Tanner Carly. The drive was
also highlighted by a beauty of a pass completion to Dustin VanWhy,
good for 27 yards. The Spartans finished the drive with a 3 yard run by Butler,
and the PAT narrowed the gap to 20-7.
Delhi came back
strong, however, and proved an ability to sustain even longer drives. Delhi
took off on a 7+ minute 76 yard drive picking up 5 first downs along the way.
The drive was capped off with a 12 yard post pattern pass completion from senior
QB Anthony Salerno to O’Connell. Ellis provided the 2 point conversion, and
Delhi went into halftime with a 28-7 advantage.
The Bulldogs
received the 2nd half kickoff, and the offensive muscle continued to
flex. After a kickoff return by Ellis to the Delhi 45, the ‘Dogs picked up
another 3 first downs en route to a Telian 8 yard TD
run. Telians number came up again on a successful 2
point attempt, and the ‘Dogs were in command with a 36-7 lead.
The Spartans received
the following kickoff, and again showed some ability to move the ball. Unatego picked up 3 more first downs and moved down to the
Delhi 20 before the ‘Dog defense stiffened somewhat, aided by a key Unatego penalty. The Spartans attempted a 37 yard field
goal, but the strong kick barely missed to the right.
Delhi would put one
more score in in the 4th quarter on an Ellis 10 yard run topping off
an 80 yard drive, and backups Brian Ingram and Eli Wright would do a fine job
running the ball as well, while Unatego would not
really threaten again.
Delhi faces
Harpursville at home on Saturday, a week after the Hornets suffered a 44-38
overtime loss to Livingston Manor.
