Delhi 58, Sullivan West 13

 

Delhi performed a near repeat of a year ago in dismantling a respectable Sullivan West team. Delhi scored 8 TD’s and ran up 424 yards of offense in the 58-13 victory. The defense took a no-hitter deep into the 3rd quarter – with 4 minutes left in the 3rd Sullivan West had no first downs, 1 net yard of offense, and the score was 36-0. Sully West then was able to complete 2 long passes and a TD a couple plays later. After heavily substitution, Sully West was able to run up some better offensive stats.

While Delhi’s defense was recording numerous 3-and-out’s, the offense was able to steadily move the ball. Sullivan West’s punts into the wind and a fumble gave Delhi a short field on the first few possessions. Delhi picked up 3 first downs on each of the first 2 drives, going 45 and 47 yards, and 1 first down on the 3rd drive, going 20 yards following a fumble. On the second and third drives, Sullivan West gave up the yards somewhat more grudgingly, not allowing a run over 8 yards. 6 plays in the first 3 drives went for one yard or less, as Sullivan West fought valiantly to start the game. As Nate Rockefeller and Brenton Hood worked more and more, however, the tackling started to fall off a bit more, and two broke off some bigger runs.

Rockefeller ended with 3 TD’s, while Hood had 2. Chad Rockefeller and Trent Kathmann each scored their first varsity TD’s.
