Delhi Renews with Sidney
Delhi over the next
3 weeks will face the Warriors, the Bulldogs, and the Warriors, and they
actually aren’t on the Twilight Zone….
Delhi continues a
tough opening half of the season by inviting Sidney’s Warriors to town. After
more than a decade of Delhi dominance in the rivalry, Sidney has gotten the
best of the Bulldogs lately, winning the last 7 games back to 2002. That included
2 seasons (2003 and 2005) where the teams met twice. The pair took a year off
last year, a year after Delhi fell 23-22 on a last minute field goal by soccer
player turned football player Andy Foote (no joke, that was his name).
This year looks
eerily familiar, as another soccer player has made the switch (and no, his name
is not Harry Legg). Senior Mike Guerriere has brought considerable athleticism
to Sidney’s team, and in his first high school football game burned out 160
yards and 2 TD’s on just 6 carries (a whopping 27 ypc average!). And yes, he
does kick.
Sidney is coming
off of a 3-6 season, but was extremely young last year, and improved greatly to
win 3 of their last 4 games. Unfortunately for the Warriors, a couple of their
young players have left town, though Guerriere has filled in the hole nicely.
Complimenting
Guerriere is junior Aaron Wood, who had 105 yards rushing in last week’s game.
The Warriors only attempted one pass, but it could be due to the fact that they
jumped to a 20-0 first quarter lead before winning 33-7, over a Mt. Markham team
that last year lost only a single game, and that to class C state champion
Bishop Ludden. Sidney’s defense was strong in the game as well, as they held Mt.
Markham to 132 yards rushing, and 0 completions on 11 pass attempts, with 2
interceptions.
Delhi and Sidney
look to be in very similar positions, each having scored strong victories, but
both not sure how strong the competition was. Delhi will bring its very
well-balanced offensive attack and try to make some room against Sidney.
With both teams up
and coming and playing well, this could be a very exciting game, as long as it
doesn’t end in a field goal….
