Darling and Bulldogs Take it to Saints

Delhi secured a playoff spot and came a step closer to a division title with a 16-0 shutout of Seton Catholic on a cool but pleasant Saturday evening.

Delhi shook off the previous week’s offensive woes, with 22 first downs and 342 yards providing much better punch. Delhi did struggle somewhat in finishing drives however, as some dropped passes and some pass protection problems still plagued the Bulldogs.

The Bulldog defense again flexed its muscles, allowing just 6 first downs, with 4 Seton drives fruiting not a single first down.

Seton received the ball with good field position at the 41 yard line, but was only able to advance to the 46 before needing to punt. Delhi did not fare any better on the first drive, as 2 incompletions and a fumbled running play netted 0 yards, and Delhi punted the ball away. The defense continued to be brick solid, as Seton did not gain a yard on their next possession, and punted the ball back to the Bulldogs.

Delhi was now off to work, however, as they took the ball from their own 21 all the way to paydirt. The drive was a beauty, as the ‘Dogs picked up 6 first downs along the way, and balanced out running by JJ Darling and Jack Fletcher. Fletcher finished the work with a 1 yard TD. The kick was off mark, so Delhi was up 6-0.

Seton was able to pick up a couple first downs on their next possession, but Delhi tightened up and forced another punt. Fletcher and Darling again had some nice runs. A long potential TD pass was dropped, but Delhi continued to move the ball down the field. A fumble ended the threat at the Seton 15 however.

Seton picked up another first down before punting the ball to Delhi with just under 2 minutes in the half. Delhi executed a very strong 2 minute drill, passing the ball down the field with throws to Darling and Jacob Haynes. With time running out at the 13 yard line, Delhi brought in Rune Tybirk, and the 30 yard field goal was good for a 9-0 lead at halftime.

Delhi received the ball coming out of the half, and now it was Rich Ennist and Darling who went to work, again bringing the ball right down the field, this time to the Seton 19. Now working the passing game, Delhi worked into a 4th down situation. Another potential TD pass was just missed, and Delhi turned the ball over on downs.

The Bulldog defense remained as tight as before, allowing just 4 yards on the next Seton drive, and Delhi received the ball with good field position. A 23 yard run by Darling got Delhi close, and Fletcher once again finished it off, this time with a 5 yard run. Tybirk’s kick made for the final 16-0 margin.

Delhi continued to move the ball well, but was not able to put any more in the end zone, and another field goal attempt was missed. The defense continued to hold well, and Seton never really threatened the whole game.

Darling’s 139 yards were a career high, and Marty Cole led the great defensive effort with 7 tackles.

Delhi hosts Bainbridge Guilford on Saturday for the division title. The winner of that game will play the loser of this weekend’s Groton/Tioga game, and vice versa.
