Bulldogs Fight to the End to Come Out on Top
Delhi fought a
bitterly tough battle at Oxford, and managed to come out on top following a
Jack Fletcher TD run and an Anthony Salerno to Jacob Sackett
pass for the 2 point conversion. The winning plays followed Oxford’s possession
in overtime. Delhi had held Oxford to 0 yards on 2 plays, but QB John Wonka hooked up with oversized receiver Andrew Golden on
the 3rd down play for a 20 yard TD. Golden’s
kick ensured that it would take more than just a TD to avoid the loss. Fletcher
came through with 2 consecutive 10 yard runs, with the last scoring 6, and a
beautiful fake on the 2 point try set up the Salerno to Sackett
heroics.
The game put Delhi’s
offense in somewhat unfamiliar territory, as Delhi struggled for every first
down it got, especially early in the game. Oxford was able to hold Delhi’s Tom Telian and Colin Ellis to a total of 18 yards, after the 2
had tallied 368 total in the first 2 games.
Delhi began to find
some narrow openings, however, and, coupled with a timely passing first down,
was able to move inside Oxford’s 10 yard line late in the 1st
quarter. Delhi moved it up to the 1 yard line, facing a 3rd and
goal, but Oxford was able to stuff 2 consecutive inside running plays to keep
Delhi out.
While the defense
gave up a few yards on Oxford’s next possession, the Blackhawks could not come
up with the first down. Oxford lined up to punt, and Delhi’s defense came
through with a block. Oxford’s punter recovered and was tackled in the end zone
for the safety, giving Delhi a 2-0 lead.
After some more
stalling by both offenses, Delhi again began moving the ball into Oxford
territory. This time, Fletcher came through. While Oxford was stuffing the inside
line very well, Fletcher was able to get behind the defense once he made it
through the big pile, and the result was a 30 yard TD run. The 2 point
conversion was no good, and Delhi held an 8-0 lead.
The Bulldog defense
began to succumb to Oxford’s passing game a bit, and the Blackhawks were able
to pick up several first downs on a march down the field. Wonka
was able to close the deal with a 1 yard run. The 2 pointer was good, and after
another possession or 2, the teams headed to halftime tied up at 8.
The second half was
more of the same, as the teams moved the ball a bit, bending the defense some,
but having difficulty finishing things off. Oxford would strike next, as Wonka hit Golden on a long pass into pretty reasonable
coverage. The 2 pointer was no good, and Oxford would head things into the 4th
quarter with a 14-8 lead. Delhi’s offense then showed the best drive of the
evening however, as Fletcher and Salerno both had some good runs to go with
some key passing first downs. The drive would end with Salerno hitting Kevin O’Connell
on the latter’s 4th TD reception of the season. The 2 pointer came
up a half yard short, and the hard-working teams were again tied, this time at
14.
The teams would
again move the ball a bit, but trade some possessions, and neither was able to
get threateningly close before the regulation clock expired.
For the game, Delhi
held a 15-9 advantage in first downs. The Bulldogs gave up 194 passing yards,
but came out on top in total yards with a 306-244 advantage.
Delhi will face
another great passing team on Saturday as Sidney’s Warriors come to town.
Sidney QB Dylan Umbra broke the school record in week 3 with 330 yards to go
with 4 TD’s.
