New Faces as Delhi Opens ‘07

August 31, 2007

Delhi begins 2007 with a bunch of new young faces on the squad. The team of 3 frosh, 4 sophs, 9 juniors, and 6 seniors will open at home against Liberty of section IX. Gametime is set for 1:30.

Liberty, a class B school, comes into the game following 2 seasons where they posted a 1-17 record. Liberty did not have football for the 3 seasons from ‘02-’04.  The Indians were blessed with some good fortune in the off-season when 2 significant players from TriValley transferred to Liberty. Ryan and Dustin Van Lieu were key parts of TriValley’s team last year as sophomores, and they will both be 2-way starters in ’07. The twins will team up with 6’1” 210 lb. Trevor Tompkins to make a very formidable backfield.

Delhi will try out its new backfield of Trent Kathmann, Devon Bedient, and Davionne Price for the first time in a game situation. Kathmann was the backup last year, and he got a good amount of snaps. Price and Bedient saw lots of playing time, but at other positions. Both did play in the backfield on the JV level however. Delhi suffered significant losses to graduation on defense, with only Price and Bedient returning as starters. Bedient and senior Mike Rama will anchor the defense at LB, with new faces all around.

Around the division, Walton faces Sullivan West, Oxford will play Edison, BG takes on Unadilla Valley, Deposit visits Livingston Manor/Roscoe, Hancock plays Eldred, and newcomer Harpursville goes to Candor.
