Delhi Struggles with Liberty
Opening day had been kind to the Bulldogs
– after opening the fall at 8-2 over the past 10 seasons, including a
combined score of 82-7 over the past 3, the Bulldogs did not open 2011 on the
winning side, giving up several big plays and falling to the Liberty Indians by
a score of 54-22.
The Liberty squad was deep and athletic, and
was able to give the Bulldogs troubles on a number of fronts. Delhi physically
fought the game reasonably well, especially early in the game, but the heat
soon took its toll, the tackling dropped off a bit, and the big plays became
more numerous late in the game.
The early going was quite competitive, with
the teams trading possessions to start. On Liberty’s 2nd
possession, however, Anthony Covington set the tone with a 45 yard run from the
middle of the field, showing off the Indians’ athletic abilities. Delhi
would soon answer, mostly with the running of Tom Telian bringing the ball down
the field, and Telian would finish it off with a 5 yard TD run, pulling Delhi
to within 7-6 following the failed 2 point attempt.
Liberty asserted a bit of strength from here,
showing a nice run/pass balance in bringing the ball down the field, with
Covington finishing off this drive with a shorter but equally painful 4 yard TD
run.
Colin Ellis’ nice kick return game some
hope of pulling back in the game, but that soon faded following a fumble, and the game was starting to look a bit more out of
control after Liberty brought it down again with QB Marshon
Williams scoring on a 1 yarder.
The 2nd half did indeed continue
the trend of being out of control, with Liberty scoring 5 more TD’s, with
only 1 being less than 40 yards. Fortunately Delhi did show some very good
heart in fighting away even when the game was looking out of reach. The
Bulldogs set off on a very nice drive on the running of Telian, Ellis, and
Brian Ingram, and it was finished off with the 1st career TD
pass/catch by Ben Denison and Brandon Simonds. The heart continued to show on
Ingram’s 2 point run, where he seemed to be stopped cold a good yard
short, but fought admirably to surge across the line.
Denison and Simonds would hook up on another
TD pass in the 4th quarter, with this one being tipped by the
defender and Simonds alertly pulling it in to complete the 50 yard play.
Delhi will face another big challenge with
its 2nd class C foe in as many weeks, as Unatego
comes to Delhi Saturday for the ‘Dogs’ home opener. Unatego was a 41-21 winner over Oxford on Friday night,
and, like Liberty, showed the ability to spread the ball around the field very
skillfully.
