Bulldogs Continue Offensive Romp
Delhi’s Bulldogs were visited by the
Harpursville Hornets on Saturday for the Division VII opener for both teams.
The Hornets came into the game after running up 400 yards of offense in a week
1 overtime loss. Delhi played a similar story to the Unatego
win a week earlier, riding a strong, consistent offense to a 24 point 2nd
quarter and a 46-22 victory.
Similar to Delhi’s week 1 exploits, the first
2 Harpursville series made for little production against the Delhi defense. The
first series appeared to be a 3 and out, but a Delhi penalty on the punt gave
Harpursville a first down. Another 3 plays, however, and the Hornets again
faced 4th down, and this time the punt went off. Though there
weren’t any penalties this time, the play didn’t go especially well for Delhi,
as the ball was downed on the Bulldog 2 yard line. Delhi junior RB Tom Telian would quickly remedy that situation, however, as he
took a handoff to the right and weaved through Harpursville’s defense for a 48
yard gain on Delhi’s first play. A few more plays gave Delhi another first
down, and on the following 3rd down play senior FB Jack Fletcher
took off for a 33 yard TD run to complete the 7 play, 98 yard drive. The option
pitch on the 2 point attempt was bobbled, and Telian
was stopped short, but Delhi was again out of the gates ahead, at 6-0.
The dominating defense continued on
Harpursville’s next drive. The drive netted -3 yards, and the Hornet punt team
lined up for the 3rd time in the still young game. The punt was
partially blocked by senior Jacob Sackett, and Delhi
took over at Harpursville’s 32. Delhi picked up a couple more first downs
before Telian bulled his way into the end zone from a
yard out. Senior QB Anthony Salerno would waltz into the end zone for the 2
pointer, and Delhi was up 14-0 just into the 2nd quarter.
Things were feeling pretty good, but the
Hornets were about to expose some softness in the Bulldog defense. Sackett’s kickoff went into the end zone, and Harpursville
started their 3rd possession at the 20. After picking up a first
down, Hornet RB Tyler Boudreau found a nice seam and showed some great
acceleration and top end speed en route to a 69 yard TD run. Delhi’s defense
stiffened on the 2 point attempt, so Delhi now held a 14-6 advantage.
Despite the earlier dominance, the 1 TD lead
was tenuous, especially with the long scoring range Boudreau had just
exhibited. The Bulldogs needed an answer back, and the offense was able to do
just that. Starting from their own 42, the Bulldogs began moving the ball well
once again. After picking up a first down on the ground, Salerno sent a ball
downfield to senior WR Kevin O’Connell, who pulled it in and picked up a few
more yards for a 37 yard gain. O’Connell would get the call again on the very
next play, as Salerno hit him on a post pattern for an 11 yard TD. Salerno
would take the option carry in for another 2 pointer, and a 22-6 Delhi lead.
Harpursville would simply not take the hint,
however, as they came right back. A Delhi penalty gave the Hornets the ball at
the 50, and they would pick up a couple more first downs as they continued to
find those soft spots. They were able to capitalize once again, as QB Russell
Anderson hit Travis Snow for an 18 yard TD. The 2 point pass was good, and the
Hornets had again climbed back into the game, facing just a 22-14 deficit.
Delhi’s efficient offense was determined to
keep it out of reach, however. Starting from their 22, Delhi again put the real
estate behind them. Tom Telian had a key run early in
the drive, covering 32 yards. 3 plays later, it would be O’Connell again, as
Salerno threaded a long pass down the middle into traffic to his classmate for
a 30 yard TD. Salerno would make it 3 in a row with another 2 pointer, and
Delhi bumped the advantage to 30-14 with 2:44 left in the half.
Harpursville would pick up one more first
down in the half, before Delhi was finally able to hold them again. After
receiving a punt, Delhi also had a crack at adding to the damage, but one run
and 2 incomplete passes brought up a 4th down, and Delhi made their
only punt of the day. Harpursville would then run one play before the halftime
clock wound down.
The Bulldog offense was back to business in
the 3rd quarter, starting from the Delhi 37. Delhi picked up 3 more
first downs along the way, and Fletcher would be the story of the drive,
carrying the ball 6 times for 50 yards. He would finish the job with a nice 19
yard run, having punished several Hornets along the way. Salerno’s 2 point pass
to a wide open Sackett would put Delhi more firmly in
control at 38-14.
Harpursville’s offense continued to assert
itself, even in what was seeming more and more like a
hopeless cause. The Hornets began what looked like a very nice drive, picking
up 4 more first downs and advancing deep into Delhi territory. Anderson even
appeared to have a Hornet TD, but it was called back due to a holding penalty.
Delhi would then stiffen up a bit, and Harpursville turned the ball over on
downs at the Delhi 25.
The Bulldog offense would then cap a
beautiful afternoon with a timely long drive. Picking up 4 more first downs
along the way, Delhi bridged the gap into the 4th quarter, and
finished the job once again with a 9 yard Telian run.
Telian would also take in the 2 point conversion, capping
a 5 for 6 effort in that department. With a 46-14 lead
in the 4th quarter, Delhi’s consistent offense had once again done
the job.
Harpursville would still pour on what they
could, and they were able to tally another TD on a 30 yard run by Boudreau, and
the RB’s 2 pointer made for the final 46-22 margin.
Delhi advanced deep into Harpursville
territory one more time, but a tipped pass ended the drive with an
interception. O’Connell would add an interception for Delhi, and the ‘Dogs ran
out the clock to end the game.
Delhi continues the division schedule with a
road game Friday night against Oxford. The Blackhawks come into the game at 2-0
following a big win over Newfield and a 1 TD win over Seton.
