Delhi Takes Away Hornets’ Sting
Delhi resumed
division play on Saturday with a 34-14 victory over the Hornets of
Harpursville.
Delhi
authoritatively opened the game with a march right down the field, capped by a
2 yard TD run by Jack Fletcher. Rune Tybirk began a kicking show with a strong
PAT kick, and Delhi was up 7-0.
After giving up a
quick first down to the Hornets, Delhi appeared to have them stopped after 2
plays got them nearly nowhere.
Harpursville’s Casey Hine would make Delhi pay, however, as he
squirted out to the flat by himself, and pulled in a pass for a 60 yard TD
catch and run. Delhi then faced their first deficit of the year, as the 2 pt
conversion was successful, leaving Delhi trailing 8-7.
Delhi again made a
strong show of power, however, as Fletcher keyed another scoring drive,
finishing it off with a 2 yard run. The successful PAT kick gave Delhi a 14-8
lead.

After the teams
traded punts, Delhi went on the move once again. After narrowly missing a long
pass, Jacob Haynes brought in the next Anthony Salerno offering for a 30 yard
TD pass. Two attempts at the PAT kick were both blocked, and the teams headed
into halftime with Delhi up 20-8.
Delhi continued its
strong defensive effort into the 2nd half. After kicking off to open
the half, the defense was soon able to get Delhi the ball again, forcing a
punt. Delhi continued to power through the Hornets, bringing the ball down to
the 1 yard line. Salerno found a new target in wideout Tyler MacAteer, as the
two hooked up for a 1 yard TD pass. The successful PAT made it 27-8.
The defense
remained stiff as a board, and on a Harpursville passing attempt, Jacob Sackett
layed a nice hit on Hornet QB Ryan Dalpiaz as the ball was leaving, resulting
in a wobbly throw that was picked off by Delhi safety JJ Darling. Delhi went
for blood, as another long pass was sent down the field toward Haynes, but he
was not able to pull this one in. Some great running by Rich Ennist brought the
ball deep in Harpursville territory, but a fumble ended the scoring threat.

Now in the 4th
quarter, the partially substituted Delhi defense gave up a bit more ground, and
Harpursville was able to move the ball down the field, scoring on a 5 yard run
by Isaac Gatto.
Delhi put one last
exclamation point on the game, however, as Delhi drove down the field once
again, and Salerno hit MacAteer on a beautiful and difficult 25 yard TD in the
midst of heavy traffic. Tybirk’s PAT kick gave the final margin.
Fletcher and
Darling were both able to eclipse the 100 yard mark, and Delhi’s 3 TD
passes were the most the Bulldogs have had in a single game in several years.
Delhi continues the
division schedule with a contest at Deposit on Saturday.
