Bulldogs Come Up Short vs. Hornets
It was déjà vu all over again, as Delhi had
another struggling first half, followed by a much better 2nd half,
but came up short when a 2 point pass attempt fell to the grass, falling 13-12.
Shorthanded due to some injuries and some disciplinary issues, the ‘Dogs
dressed just 18 players for the game, and in addition to that Collin Ellis sat
for most of the game with an injury.
Played on a soggy and muddy field devastated
by all the weather and flooding, Harpursville opened the game with possession,
and slowly crept down the field. Delhi played some reasonable defense at times,
but it wasn’t enough to keep the 1st down chains from moving. After
getting deep into Delhi territory, the Hornets looked like they might stall,
with a penalty and a tackle for a loss pushing the line back significantly.
Mason Dean, who only carried 6 times but was the backbreaker for the game, then
showed some great speed and strength, taking off on a 38 yard run down the left
side off an option pitch. The kick was good, and the ‘Dogs were down 7-0 early.
Delhi got some good field position on the 1st
drive, and things looked up when Ellis’s 1st carry went for a 1st
down. That was all the good that would be done by the offense for quite a
while, however, as the ‘Dogs began a series of stalls, and that would be the
only 1st down of the entire 1st half for Delhi.
Fortunately, the defense stepped up the game a good bit, and the halftime score
stayed at 7-0 following a late stand in Delhi territory.
The 2nd half started out similarly
to the previous week, with Delhi marching strongly down the field, mostly on
tough running by sophomore fullback Brian Ingram. It looked like the Delhi
drive might fizzle somewhat when the ‘Dogs faced a 4th and long from
the 12 yard line, but QB Brandon Simonds executed a very nice bootleg run,
aided by a great block on the perimeter. The run was good for a TD, but the 2
point run was stopped cold by the Hornet D, and Delhi still faced a 7-6
deficit.
Harpursville came right back, and on the 1st
play after the kickoff, Dean took another option pitch left, broke some
tackles, and headed home on a 61 yard TD run. The kick was no good, and Delhi
remained within a TD and 2 pointer of the lead at 13-6.
Some hardfought defense from both sides
followed, and the teams exchanged possessions for a bit. Sophomore Ryan Telian
then came up with a huge play just beyond midway through the 4th
quarter. Breaking a couple whiffs at the line, Telian showed some great acceleration
down the middle and outran most of the Hornet defense. One would-be tackler did
get a hand on Telian’s leg at about the 15 yard line, but couldn’t bring him
down, and the young RB finished off the 52 yard run with a TD. Delhi TE Brian
Hannigan got somewhat open on the 2 point try, but Simonds faced a bit of
pressure, and the pass was off just enough that Hannigan wasn’t able to stay
with it, and Delhi remained behind at 13-12.
Delhi was able to get another possession very
late in the game, but wasn’t able to come up with a 1st down, and
turned the ball back over to Harpursville, effectively ending the game.
Delhi next faces rival Walton at home. Walton
is 3-0 and is ranked 1st in NYS Class D.
