Bulldogs Open Division with Bite

Delhi began the Section IV Division VII schedule with a show of strength, as the Bulldogs overcame yet another slow start to roll along at 51-14.

Delhi recovered a fumble on Hancock’s first possession. While the Bulldogs didn’t show complete dominance at first, they were able to push the ball down the field, including an impressive catch at the sideline by Jacob Haynes, which brought the ball to the 1 yard line. Jack Fletcher then finished the drive with the TD run.

Delhi then struggled a bit with stopping Hancock’s offense. Delhi gave up 5 first downs as Hancock moved the ball inside of Delhi’s 10 yard line. Delhi’s defense tightened, and, coupled with a Hancock penalty, brought the series to a 4th and goal from the 19. The stop appeared to be complete when the lob pass fell to the Delhi defender, but the ball tipped back out and fell into the hands of Hancock’s Cody Wellman.

Delhi’s defense then took control, however, as the Bulldogs allowed only 3 more first downs on the next 7 possessions. Delhi also moved the ball well, but struggled with a couple first half fumbles, keeping them from taking the game over. In the first half, Delhi got another TD run from Fletcher, and a nice 45 yard TD catch and run from Anthony Salerno to Haynes.

Delhi came out completely dominant in the 2nd half, scoring 3 3rd quarter TD’s to go with 2 more TD’s in the first 2 minutes. Delhi got another Haynes TD pass, 2 TD’s from Rich Ennist, including a beauty of a 57 yard run, and a TD keeper by backup QB Ethan Sackett.

Overall, the Bulldogs’ offense was very strong, tallying 456 yards to go with 18 first downs. The defense was nearly as good, as outside of the first drive and a late long TD run, the ‘Dogs gave up less than 100 yards.

On Saturday, Delhi renews the Route 10 rivalry with Walton, who is 2-0 coming off a close win over Windsor, and a 44-37 win over Sidney.
