Fletcher Powers Delhi Past Lumberjacks
Delhi continued a
strong run through the division VIII schedule with a 27-0 dominion over Deposit
on a beautiful Saturday night under portable lights. The Bulldogs didn’t play their
cleanest game of the season, but the messy parts came at times that were
largely inconsequential, and Delhi continued to show physical dominance both in
getting the ball down the field and in keeping the Lumberjacks out of the end
zone.
Delhi kicked off to
Deposit to start the game, and the Lumberjacks came out firing. Using a set
similar to what Sidney has been doing over recent years, with a shotgun, 2
WR’s, and 2 wingbacks, Deposit passed on most plays of the first several
possessions. While missing on many, the Lumberjacks were able to connect on a
few big plays. Delhi was able to limit the damage, however, stopping Deposit on
downs on the first possession, and recovering a fumble on the next. Delhi struggled
early as well, fumbling on their own 24 yard line on the first possession, and
throwing the first interception of the year on the next possession, the latter
coming after a drive took Delhi from their own 8 to Deposit’s 22, picking up 5
first downs along the way.
On Deposit’s next
drive, however, JJ Darling picked off a Deposit pass at their 30 and returned
it to the 10. Jack Fletcher took it in from 5 yards out to open the scoring,
and the first of Rune Tybirk’s 3 PAT kicks made it 7-0.
Delhi’s defense
again held solid, and Deposit attempted an ill-advised fake punt from their own
territory. The play was unsuccessful, and Delhi took over at the 32. Delhi
picked up a first down, but the drive stalled on downs at the 15. The Bulldogs
then pushed the Lumberjacks backward, forcing a punt from the 11.
Taking over from
the 48 of Deposit, Delhi marched down the field on the running of Fletcher and Rich
Ennist, and following 3 more first downs, Ennist finished the drive with an 8
yard TD run, and the kick made it 14-0 in the 2nd quarter. Delhi had
one more opportunity before the half, recovering a fumble at Deposit’s 45, but
was again not able to capitalize, handing the ball over on downs at the 28.
Now late in the
half, Deposit was able to rip off a couple big plays, and managed to move to
the Delhi 35, but the end of the half ended the threat.
The first drive of
the 2nd half was Delhi’s bread and butter, with the ‘Dogs adding
another 5 first downs on great runs by Fletcher and Ennist, and Ennist
completed the 63 yard trip with a 15 yard TD pass, punishing several defenders
along the way. The kick was no good, and Delhi had a commanding 20-0 lead.
Deposit was able to
pick up another first down, but a jump ball was hauled in by Delhi’s Chris
Payne, and Delhi took over at their own 22. After 3 more first downs, Anthony
Salerno hit Jacob Haynes right at the sideline in the end zone for a 5 yard TD,
as the airborne Haynes was just barely able to bring his feet to the ground in
bounds. The kick made for the final 27-0 margin.
In all, Delhi was
able to run up a season high 20 first downs (compared with 8 for Deposit), to
go with Fletcher’s season high 224 yards, and Delhi’s defense pitched their 2nd
shutout of the season.
Delhi continues
divisional play with a home contest against Oxford on Saturday.
