‘Dogs Close Another
Unbeaten Divisional Schedule
Delhi closed out a
3rd consecutive season unbeaten in divisional play with a dominating
48-6 victory over Deposit/Hancock in the last game of the season at Dave Kelly
field. Tom Telian, Jack Fletcher, and Colin Ellis
combined for just under 300 yards, and Anthony Salerno threw TD passes on each
of his 3 completions in the dominant effort.
As has been the
case for most of the year, the Bulldogs came out very strong, and this week
Delhi was able to put the game out of reach right away. Deposit took the
opening kickoff, and, following a nice return, was not able to move at all, and immediately punted after the 3 and out. Delhi
opened the day’s offensive show from their own 21 yard
line and immediately went to work. A run by Fletcher and another by Telian gave Delhi one 1st down,
and 2 plays later Telian found a nice seam and took
off on a 50 yard carry, being pulled down at the 7. Two carries by Fletcher put
the ball in the end zone. Fletcher actually fumbled on the 2 point try, but
guard Brandon Snyder found his way into the scoring stats by falling on the
ball in the end zone, putting Delhi up 8-0.
It started to look
like a rough day for Deposit/Hancock, as the Eagles fumbled the ensuing kickoff
return, giving Delhi the ball at the 35. The offense only needed one play to
get it done, as QB Anthony Salerno hit wide open TE Jake Sackett
on a seam, and Delhi had a 2 TD lead. Colin Ellis took in the 2 point try, and
the lead was 16-0 and quickly expanding.
Another 3 and out
by Deposit followed, but a 55 yard punt buried Delhi deep, inside their own 10
yard line. It was still quick work for the offense, however. After one running
play, Salerno again found Sackett open in the seam,
and after breaking a tackle the senior raced all the way to paydirt
for an 88 yard TD catch and run. Ellis again tacked 2 more points on, and Delhi
was up 24-0 less than half way through the 1st quarter.
Delhi would find
the red zone twice more in the 1st quarter, once following an
interception by Kevin O’Connell. The 1st of these 2 trips ended when
Salerno threw just his 2nd interception of the season in the end
zone. Delhi was able to convert on its next possession, however, as Fletcher
put in a 3 yard TD, and Salerno added the 2 pointer for a 32-0 lead at the end
of the quarter.
The Eagles were
finally able to piece a drive together, picking up 3 first downs. Two very nice
pass receptions by Erick Hicks brought the ball down inside Delhi’s 5 yard
line. A rush and 2 incomplete passes netted 0 yards and brought a 4th
and goal, but QB Derek Lenio was able to make a very
nice play on 4th down, avoiding heavy Bulldog pressure and finding
Tom Banicky open in the front corner of the end zone.
Banicky did a great job pulling the ball in while
keeping his feet in bounds for the TD. The PAT kick was wide right, and Delhi
held a 32-6 lead.
Delhi would put one
more in before the half, as a 38 yard run by Fletcher brought the ball back
into the red zone once more. Salerno hit O’Connell for 11 yards and the
latter’s 7th TD catch of the season.
Deposit/Hancock’s
final possession of the 1st half ended when James Ingram did a very
nice job intercepting a long pass from Lenio.
Delhi opened the 2nd
half with another drive into the red zone of Deposit/Hancock, but was not able
to convert. Two sacks of Salerno coupled with 2 short running plays gave the
Eagles the ball on downs. Delhi was able to put an additional score in during
the 4th quarter, however, as Ellis and Telian
had some good runs, and Salerno was able to finish the job on a 5 yard option
keeper. Freshman Brian Ingram scored his first varsity points on the 2 pointer
for the final 48-6 margin.
Delhi travels to
Union Endicott High School Saturday to face the Candor Indians, the 2nd
seed from Division VIII. Candor has a 7-1 record, including a 22-7 victory over
defending Section IV Class D champ Groton. Game time is tentatively scheduled
for 1 pm, with Tioga and Walton following in the other semifinal at 4 pm.
