Delhi to Face Candor in D Semi
For the 2nd
time in 5 years, Delhi will face the Candor Indians in a Section IV Class D
Semifinal. Like the 2006 matchup, the game will be held at Union Endicott’s
Ty Cobb Stadium. Game time is set for 1 pm. Following the game, at 4 pm, Walton
will face Tioga in the other Class D Semifinal.
In 2006, Nate
Rockefeller and James Card combined for 220 yards and 3 TD’s, and the
defense held Candor to 168 total yards as Delhi defeated the west’s
top-seeded team 28-11. Delhi was the east’s 2nd seed in 2006
due to a regular season loss to Walton.
Delhi comes into
this semi as the top seed, thanks to undefeated divisional play, including a
20-18 win at Walton 3 weeks ago. Candor comes into the game as the 2nd
seed from the west, as the result of a 3-way tie-breaker. Top seeded Tioga, 2nd
seeded Candor, and Groton (who didn’t make the playoffs) all sported identical
7-1 overall and 6-1 divisional records, with each having beaten one of the
other. The tie-breaker is based on a points system which gives points for
schools you’ve beaten based on school size, and bonus points based on
beating teams with winning records. For non-division games, all 3 had beaten a
class C school, but only Tioga had beaten a school with at least 4 wins (Division
VI champ Newark Valley). So with Tioga winning the top seed, the 2nd
seed was based on head to head competition, and Candor
had beaten Groton 22-7 in week 2.
Candor sports a
varied offensive attack. Chad Rose and Dillon Shaw have each surpassed 100
yards in a game this season, and sophomore Clifford Switzer has exceeded 200 on
at least one occasion. QB Harry Hartman passed for over 100 yards in last week’s
44-6 win over Newfield. Switzer was apparently injured for Candor’s lone
loss of the season, a 38-14 setback to Tioga.
Here are Candor’s
week by week results for 2010:
Candor 21,
Spencer-Van Etten 14
Candor 22, Groton 7
Candor 29, Moravia
20
Tioga 38, Candor 14
Candor 33, Notre
Dame 18
Candor 32,
Odessa-Montour 14
Candor 36, Edison 6
Candor 44, Newfield
6
The closest thing
to a common opponent with Delhi was Notre Dame. Delhi opponent Seton Catholic
played Notre Dame in week 1, coming out with a 26-22 victory. Delhi beat Seton
24-19 in week 5.
The winners of the semis
will meet in next week’s Class D final, tentatively set for 4 pm at Ty
Cobb.
