Bulldogs to Open 2009 with Liberty

Delhi opens the 2009 campaign for the 3rd season in a row with a matchup against Section IX’s Liberty. Liberty won the 2007 game 26-22 down in Liberty, and Delhi took the home 2008 game 24-0. This season’s game returns to Delhi at 1:30 on Saturday.

Liberty is a class C team again this season (class B in 2007), and struggled through an injury-plagued 2-7 season last year. The Indians return all-star RB/LB Brandon Tompkins, a 4 year varsity starter. Tompkins will be joined in the backfield by a sophomore QB, one Marshon Williams. Other key players for Liberty include RB’s Eddie Soto and Jovaughen Clark, and linemen Kris Merklin, Paul Heisler, and Darren Klein. Liberty is coached by first year coach John Wilhelm, who takes over for Jim O’Conner.

Delhi looks to set a strong pace for the season, after coming off of several strong performances, followed by a disappointing loss to end the 2008 season. Jack Fletcher will be looked to to get the ground game going, and in general Delhi will look to establish a strong physical game, as Marty Cole and the rest of the line look to take ahold of the game.
