1996
Record: 7-2
Key Players: Brooks McMurry (TE/LB),
Greg Balcavage (TE/LB), Chris Hilson (G/LB), Zach Berliner (RB/LB), Brad Bell
(QB)
Highlights: Delhi came back from 1995’s
tremendous season riding on the backs of a few key players returning from the
previous season’s section IV class C champs.
All 4 linebackers
returned from a defense that allowed a total of 3 TD’s on the season. The
losses in the rest of the defense took their toll however, and while this
defense was still very very good, it couldn’t match the unbelievable exploits
of the previous season.
Delhi started the
season at 4-0 before heading down route 10 to face Walton. Walton came into the
game in a very unfamiliar situation – following a slew of injuries they lost
the first 3 games of the season before narrowly pulling out a win against
Greene. Delhi looked to be the favorite going in, but it was just not the
Bulldogs’ day. Delhi, with star RB Berliner playing injured, suffered 7
turnovers, including 3 interceptions. The defense played very well, but
couldn’t handle the offense giving the ball away repeatedly, and wasn’t able to
win the game for the Dogs. Delhi suffered an 8 point loss.
Now basically out
of the playoffs, the Bulldogs continued to play quite well through the balance
of the season, with a solid defeat of Unatego and a 40-0 win over Hancock.
Delhi closed the season at home against a strong Greene team. Delhi had a few
injuries in the game, and looked heartless knowing the playoffs were out of
reach. Greene played a strong game and came out with a 17-0 shutout of Delhi.
Greg Balcavage went
on to star at TE at Hartwick in the next few years.
