Bulldogs Open 2008 with Liberty’s Indians

Delhi kicks off the 2008 campaign with a rematch against the Indians of Liberty. Last year in Delhi, Liberty jumped to a 26-0 4th quarter lead, and held off a late Delhi rally to win 26-22. Liberty had previously had one single win over the previous 2 seasons, and did not have football the season before.

Liberty finished a surprising 2007 at 6-2, including a win over section IX class B champ New Paltz, but narrowly missed the playoffs.

Liberty graduated their primary weapon, RB/LB Trevor Tompkins, but they return a very strong player in RB/DE Ryan VanLieu, who ran for just under 600 yards in 2007. Ryan’s twin brother, Dustin, was slated to be a returner as well, but instead transferred back to his previous school TriValley. Joining VanLieu in the backfield is a younger Tompkins, 5’9” 170 lb TB Brandon.

The Indians also boast a strong WR in senior Ivan Rivera, making for a balanced offense.

The offensive skill positions were a strength against Delhi in 2007, and look to be strong again. Liberty hopes increased numbers this year (last year they ended with 17 healthy kids) will also bolster up the lines and the defense.

Delhi will seek to establish its 2008 personality, as Davionne Price, Jack Fletcher, and an experienced O-line look to build a running game to go with Anthony Salerno, Luke Burns, and Jacob Haynes working on the passing game. The defense will be anchored by Price, Fletcher, and nose tackle Marty Cole.

The remnants of hurricane Hanna make a very wet game likely, so be sure to bring the umbrella.

To get to Liberty High School, go to Downsville, and take 206 to Roscoe, and get on 17 East. Get off at exit 99, and go to the intersection with Main St. Turn left onto Main St, and then take a right onto Buckley St. Go to the top of the hill and the school is on the right.
